CHAPLAINCY AT HM PENITENTIARY
ABOUT US
“… I was in prison and you visited me.”
Matthew 25:36
Our Vision for this Ministry
Through Chaplaincy at HM Penitentiary, the Archdiocese of St. John’s expresses and lives out Christ’s command to reach out to those in prison in a spirit of justice and charity.
Our Mission
The Prison Ministry of the Archdiocese of St. John’s is mandated to:
- Call the Archdiocesan Community to an increased awareness and understanding of its responsibility to minister to prisoners as it is expressed in Scripture and the Church’s teaching and Tradition;
- Provide practical leadership for the efforts of the Archdiocese to respond to the needs of prisoners, released prisoners, their families and victims of crime.
"We are still a long way from the time when our conscience can be certain of having done everything possible to prevent crime and to control it effectively so that it no longer does harm and, at the same time, to offer to those who commit crimes a way of redeeming themselves and making a positive return to society. If all those in some way involved in the problem ... develop this line of thought, perhaps humanity as a whole could take a great step forward in creating a more serene and peaceful society."
- Pope John Paul II (2000) Message for the Jubilee in Prisons
