Archdiocesan Synod

Archdiocese of St. John's

"Upon This Rock We Will Build Our Church"

SCRIPTURAL FOCUS: Matthew 7:24-27
‘Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!’

Did you know that the face of the Archdiocese has changed radically over the past five years? There has been a huge migration of people into the northeast Avalon, and communities and parishes such as Paradise, Kelligrews, Torbay, Witless Bay and Bay Bulls have been growing at a tremendous rate, while the populations of some of our outport parishes have been declining.

We see this happening around us, and so the Church—we, the People of God—must ask: What does this mean? How are we to respond to the needs of God’s people, particularly the most vulnerable, in the face of such massive change? Do the structures and services that we now have in place meet the needs of people in this time of transition and migration? How do we create and support pastoral units that make sense and provide care?

The Purpose of Our Synod

1. To first get a good picture of what’s happening in our Archdiocese and in each of its constitutive parts.

2. Then, we will ask: What is working well? What do you want to celebrate, or hold up as significant that we might all learn from?

3. A third phase will be to ask: If you were to imagine your pastoral unit (parish, community, mission, etc.) five years from now, what would you want it to look like? … act like? … serve like?

So join the process!

When you are offered the opportunity to contribute, lend your voice, your insights, your ideas, your vision and your hope. Together, let’s continue to build on the Rock that is Jesus Christ, and continue His presence in a world that needs Him now more than ever!
