Invitation to Dioceses/Eparchies to Encourage Fundraising for Fort McMurray Victims

May 11, 2016

Dear Father/Monsignor and Parishioners;

Every one of us here in the Archdiocese of St. John’s is related to or knows someone in Fort McMurray.

We have watched with horror and sympathy as events played out before our eyes in the media as the area was devastated by wildfires.

Because the Government of Canada is matching donations made to the Canadian Red Cross for fire relief, Archbishop Currie and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. John’s have made donations to the Red Cross to aid in the relief of persons affected by this tragedy.

Archbishop Currie encourages the people of the Archdiocese to donate directly to the Canadian Red Cross, in order to avail of these matching funds.

If parishes wish to forward monies collected to the Archdiocese, we will be happy to make sure that the amount is forwarded to the Red Cross.

A letter to Bishop Paul Terrio (bishop of the Diocese of St. Paul, in which Fort McMurray is located, from CCCB President Bishop Douglas Crosby, O.M.I., and also a message from Pope Francis to Bishop Terrio. Both texts concern the wildfire disaster in Fort McMurray and surrounding region. The letter from the President includes an invitation for all Bishops who have not already done so to encourage their faithful to pray for those in the city and area of Fort McMurray, as well as to make donations to assist those impacted by this terrible natural disaster.

God bless,

Anne
