Lives Recalled

A Compendium

Forward

In 2010, after many years of research, Monsignor Francis A. Coady finished his book “Lives Recalled: Priests Who Worked in Newfoundland 1629-2010.” The book was published by the Knights of Columbus of Newfoundland and Labrador. A second edition with some additions was published in 2011.

The book became an instant success and a reference for bishops, priests and all interested in the history of the Roman Catholic Church in Newfoundland.  The short biographies of priests and bishops who worked here and have passed on give a personal glimpse of aspects of our history through the lives of priests who were natives of this island or who came here and often remained until the end of their lives.

There have been many requests for updates. Rather than publish a new edition, it appears more practical to publish updates on the web site of the Archdiocese of St. John’s, where they can be easily accessed.  Sadly, some fifty priests who worked on the island of Newfoundland have passed on since 2010, including Monsignor Coady. I have known many of them personally. It has been a pleasure for me to have written these mini-bios so that their lives and ministry will be remembered and available to read now and in the future. My plan is to publish updates periodically.
